KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (RNS) The announcement was made by the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal, Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, after members of the Malaysian Islamic Authority gazed into the heavens and spotted the new moon signaling the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

In keeping with tradition, Muslims of Kuala Lumpur break the Ramadan fast with a community meal, known as “iftar,” and evening prayers known as “tarawih.”
