Mike Huckabee calls Jim Carrey a ‘Christaphobe’ after tweet about his daughter

(USA Today) — If something is “smokin’,” perhaps it’s from the heat Jim Carrey received after sharing a portrait online that bears resemblance to White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The Kidding actor shared his artwork on Twitter Saturday (March 17) with a scathing caption.

“This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked. Monstrous!” he wrote.

Marleah Leslie, a rep for Carrey, confirmed the portrait is his handiwork but did not confirm if  Sanders is the subject.

Twitter users knocked Carrey for his use of the word “Christian.”

“We all sin,” one user tweeted in response. Another shared a meme of someone lifting the lid of a trash can. “Hey look celebrity opinions,” the photo’s text read. One Twitter user shared a photo of Carrey, writing “And this is the picture if (sic) a has-been, who hasn’t put out a decent movie in 15 years.”

Sanders’ father, former Arkansas governor-turned-TV pundit Mike Huckabee, also hurled insults at Carrey on the social media site. “Pathetic BULLY, sexist, hater, bigot & ‘Christaphobe’ @jimcarrey attacks @PressSec for her faith; what would be hypocritical Hollywood reaction if he called someone a ‘so-called Muslim’ or ‘so-called Jew?’ ” the former governor of Arkansas tweeted, adding “#classlessCarrey.”

Carrey responded to Huckabee’s slight in a statement issued to The Young Turks.

“I am so gratified by the reaction to my little drawings. It is the job of a political cartoon to vex those who abuse power or enable those abuses,” his statement read. “This administration has been lying to the American people from day one while plundering the country and debasing our values. And those who cover for this shameful mobster of a President are putting makeup on a melanoma and telling the cancer patient that everything’s fine. Monstrous? You bet!”

Carrey has previously shared unflattering artistic works of Sanders’ boss, President Trump. Last August, Carrey tweeted an image of Trump at the helm of a boat that was sinking into a sea of “lies.”

“WHAT WILL IT TAKE for the GOP to throw this madman overboard?” Carrey captioned the tweet. “HOW LOW MUST WE SINK before REPS become patriotic?”

In November, Carrey posted a photo of what appeared to be Trump kissing the behind of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “With Trump in the WH, Putin may win the 3rd World War without firing a shot,” Carrey wrote at the time. “#PuckerUpPOTUS”

During a Q&A with W published in September, Carrey said painting Trump felt cathartic. “I think no one can really escape that aspect of life at this moment — the feeling of loss of control,” he said.

  • An arrogant, self entitled Christian fascist is upset that freedom of expression in the US includes anything other than being a blind sycophant to his religion…his interpretation of said religion.

  • Gee. the Huckster get’s all of that out of an unflattering portrait of his daughter. Maybe Mr. Carrey just doesn’t care for her, and would have had exactly the same reaction to her had she been a man.

Mr. Hucksterbee, your daughter is in the public eye, and has a job explaining the lies of someone who lies for a living. If she can’t stand the heat, maybe it’s just not the right job for her, and she could find a nice, air conditioned room.

But the giveaway is the “so called” part. Conservative Christians love to paint liberal Christians as so called. But he managed to get in his buzzwords. Hollywood, Jews, Muslims, Christ haters, bully.

  • Seems right on the mark to me. Love the comments ‘we all sin.’ That only applies as an excuse when a darling of the ‘Christian’ right gets caught with his/her pants down, or fingers in the till, or adopting a ‘wide stance’ in an airport bathroom. Otherwise, let’s use the bible to beat people to death, in moral Outrage!™

  • Meh

Carrey has a right to make an artistic/political statement. Huckabee et. al. have a right to express opposition.

    Moving on….

  • Well, if the responses say “we all sin” at least they are admitting that Sanders is sinning everytime she lies for her devil boss. They got one thing right!

It seems blasphemous on the part of Daddy huckabee to refer to his daughter as Christ…(Carey can only be a Christaphobe if Huckabee is interpreting the image as that of christ)

  • He accused Sanders of not living up to the values of Christianity – not Christianity itself. Daddy is smart enough to know that but played the “phobe” card – a move many right-wing Christians decry when pulled by liberals regarding Islam.

  • I’d just like to say that one can be a committed Christian and hold the very same view as Carrey’s, so I don’t understand Huckabee’s Christaphobe comment. Having said that, I still hope we can move toward humble thoughtful dialogue in our country. Trump does make that more difficult though…

  • Calm yourself down, then pop-quiz me, brother Jim Carrey.

    (1) TRUE OR FALSE: “White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders … [is] “a Christian whose only purpose in life is to lie for the wicked.”

FALSE. (Although White House press secretaries lie all the time, for Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, and so on.)

    (2) TRUE OR FALSE: Jim Carrey’s “little drawings … vex those who abuse power or enable those abuses”.

FALSE. (That’s not what’s happening here and you know it.)

    (3) TRUE OR FALSE: “[Trump’s] administration has been lying to the American people from day one while plundering the country and debasing our values.”

FALSE. (X to grind. I much prefer it when you made us all LOL, actually.)

    (4) TRUE OR FALSE: Christian Right Nationalists do “cover for this … President”.

TRUE. (And shamelessly & unconscionably at that!)

    (5) TRUE OR FALSE: “With Trump in the WH, Putin may win the 3rd World War without firing a shot”.

FALSE. (But Putin for & as US President 2020 with Michael Moore as the Veep? Oh yeah & yaay!)

  • Hey good to hear from you again. Care to comment, now that you’re here?

For according to J. Matt Barber, “BLTs, Hate Crimes, and Christaphobia”, CNS News, August 27, 2012:

“Secular-‘progressive’ hostility toward Christianity is at an all-time high. But it’s not just ‘gay’ activists and other ‘progressive’ extremists. It’s systemic. It’s Democrat-tested and Obama-approved. … Yet the same ‘progressives’ who find ‘homophobia’ under every bed, and ‘Islamophobia’ around each corner, have never imagined the cancerous ‘Christaphobia’ that courses throughout their very own veins.”

  • Uhm the “Christa” part there refers to “Christ[i]a[ns]” – not your Lord & Savior. Look it up.

  • According to Cambridge University Dictionaries, “fascist [means] someone who supports fascism”. And “fascism [means] a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control, and being extremely proud of country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed”.

ERGO: Mike Huckabee ain’t no “fascist”!

    I AM.

  • I would have to agree that there is hostility toward the conservative Christian positions on abortion, gay rights, same-sex marriages, evolution and Islam from many on the Left. Since they don’t seem to have issues with liberal Christianity, I can’t say it’s a hatred of Christianity itself. There is also a growing number on the Left tolerating Farrakhan and his antisemitism. They are also becoming more anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian – but this may be political and not religious. The Left’s tolerance of the same bad views in Islam they condemn fundamentalist Christians for disturbs me.

  • I’m not “very disturbed”, however, by Christaphobes. Just by atheists who call all non-atheists, anti-atheists & a-atheists “fascist”! I know you’re one, Cannabis, the 1st one with the C-word, but you’re harmless. Proof: you just admitted I ain’t no fascist.

  • One thing, though, that hurts me a lot is the fact that my people of faith have become agitators, provocateurs, noisy, troublemakers. So unlike what they were like when their testimonies & fellowship opened my faith toward God & Jesus. Our mutual understanding, then, was to live quiet & peaceful lives in the world. Our bridge to the world was only evangelism among those open to us. But if they reject, we respectfully bid farewell to them. And that was it. None of this politics of shoving what we want down people’s throats.

The way I see it, then, contrary to that snippet from CNS News, my people of faith are now reaping what we’ve sown since the eras of the 2 Giant False Teachers. Billy Graham. Jerry Falwell.

  • ME: I’m not “very disturbed” by Christaphobes.

    CANISPULCHRAE: What? Incoherent.

ME: I’m “very disturbed” rather by atheists who, like NavyLadyBlues05, call all non-atheists, anti-atheists & a-atheists “fascist”! Because by definition, “fascist [means] someone who supports fascism”. And “fascism [means] a political system based on a very powerful leader, state control, and being extremely proud of country and race, and in which political opposition is not allowed”.

    CANISPULCHRAE: What? Incoherent.

ME: I know you’re one of those Christaphobes, but I’m not “very disturbed” by you, because you’re harmless. Proof: you just admitted I ain’t no fascist. “You’re not a fascist”, you told me.

    CANISPULCHRAE: What? Incoherent.

ME: No, it’s the Christaphobe who assured the Christian that s/he’s “not a fascist but just a very disturbed human being” – who is. A very disturbed and incoherent Christaphobe.

    CANISPULCHRAE: What? Incoherent.

  • Wow, you know a big word, “Christaphobe” (pathetic, defensive Xtians’ response to “Homophobe”). The only problem is… I support many good Christian congregations. So your label doesn’t fit me. Your defensiveness is noted.
