Roles and Responsibilities

The managing editor coordinates the production of stories about religion, spirituality, and ethics for the Religion News Service (RNS) website and subscriber publications

The position directs, supervises and schedules from RNS staff writers, columnists and freelance writers.  The managing editor also facilitates the distribution of RNS content through the Associated Press.

The managing editor maintains the editorial calendar for enterprise, features, and opinion content and ensures that all staff members hit production deadlines.

This editor independently edits news and feature articles, as well as opinion pieces of staff journalists, contract writers and freelancers.

All produced content acts as a resource for the public and media at large, promoting religious literacy for the Religion News audience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Report directly to the editor-in-chief and work closely with the RNS senior editor and staff journalists, contract writers and freelancers.
  • With editor-in-chief and senior editor, plan story coverage and maintain an editorial calendar of which content will publish when and with what news hook.
  • Develop and execute ideas for written content that will resonate with our audience and elevate the RNS brand.
  • Direct, supervise and educate RNS staff writers, columnists and freelance writers.
  • Assign and edit news and feature articles and opinion pieces by staff and outside contributors.
  • Inform RNS staff writers of errors in procedure and helps them perform corrective action(s) if necessary.
  • Work with multimedia editors on photography, video and other graphics to complement and extend written content.
  • Promote content on social media.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is required.

Four or more years of editorial experience demonstrated in a professional portfolio is required.

Demonstrated subject area knowledge of religion and spirituality, denominational and interfaith affairs, religious practice, the American religious landscape, and congregational life.

Vatican Beat Reporter, Rome

Please note that this position is based in Rome, Italy.

Role and Responsibilities

The Vatican beat reporter is based in Rome and covers the Vatican on behalf of the Religion News Service (RNS). The reporter is responsible for reporting on all newsworthy events involving the Pope and the Roman Curia and their interactions with local churches and hierarchies around the world. The position manages a range of tasks and projects in a fast-paced work environment, including identifying information to post on RNS social media, monitoring news sources and identifying activities that deepen the relationship between RNS and its audience.

The Vatican beat reporter is responsible for the planning and timely submission of all assignments, including those from remote locations using limited mobile technology. All produced content acts as a resource for the public and media at large, promoting religious literacy for the Religion News audience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • The Vatican beat reporter reports directly to the U.S.-based Editor-in-Chief of RNS.
  • Identify and report compelling stories for a general interest audience and readers interested in the workings and decisions of the Holy See. Generate story ideas and daily enterprise.
  • Pitch stories, undertake new assignments and investigate news leads and tips.
  • Monitor news outlets and Catholic news sources, attending relevant events on the Vatican beat and participating in other activities that build relationships and deepen an understanding of the issues.
  • Plan and submit all assignments on time. Plan projects/assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Publish or broadcast news stories in both digital and video formats when required.
  • Having little day-to-day supervision, the position retains authority over many daily tasks (i.e., length of articles, video publishing, event attendance, travel, story investigation, source determinations) and schedules.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or equivalent is required.

Five or more years of applicable journalistic experience is required.

National Reporter, Los Angeles/West Coast U.S.

Role and Responsibilities

The National Reporter will report, write and produce multimedia enterprise and breaking news stories about religion, spirituality and ethics–focusing particularly on the religious practices and experiences of Hispanic Americans and other diverse religious groups. The national reporter will also report on the intersection of popular culture and religion—and contribute to breaking and national news projects as needed.

Preference will be given to candidates in Los Angeles/Southern California.

All produced content acts as a resource for the public and media at large, promoting religious literacy for the Religion News audience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • The national beat reporter reports directly to the U.S.-based Editor-in-Chief of RNS.
  • Identify and report compelling stories for a general interest audience.
  • Pitch stories, undertake new assignments and investigate news leads and tips.
  • Work closely with RNS staff members on breaking and enterprise coverage.
  • Turn data and daily news developments into enterprise coverage that provides a deeper look into the practice of religion in America and changes in the religious landscape.
  • Follow pop culture trends that intersect with religious life.
  • Develop a deep and rich understanding of the religious institutions, communities, and day to day lives of Hispanic Americans.
  • Publish or broadcast news stories in both digital and video formats when required.
